The people who make up Beaton Burke Young LLP acknowledge that our office is located on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. We further acknowledge that Toronto is currently the home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. Toronto is covered by Treaty 13, signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississauga and Chippewa bands.
Our work also takes place on traditional Indigenous territories across the province. We acknowledge that there are 46 treaties and other agreements that cover the geographic area now called Ontario.
We acknowledge that First Nation, Inuit and Metis people face disproportionate levels of discrimination in Canadian society and particularly within in the legal system and profession. We believe that it is our duty as advocates and community members to develop appropriate culture competencies and to actively educate ourselves about these topics in an ongoing way.
