Representation

We represent individuals in all types of family law matters.  We will work with you to gather the information necessary to provide you with advice, discuss your options and agree on a path forward.

Negotiation with the assistance of counsel is often the first step. Many cases can be resolved this way and do not require alternative dispute resolution or the court system. If direct negotiations are unsuccessful or not a reasonable option for you, we will act on your behalf in mediation, arbitration or court.  In these processes, we provide both written and oral advocacy.

It is important to us that you understand each step of the process.  This will allow you to plan ahead, better assess your options and make informed decisions.

Mediation

When negotiations reach an impasse, mediation is often the next best step to resolve your family law dispute. In mediation, an impartial professional facilitates discussion, compromise and settlement.

Mediation is a voluntary process that encourages creative and practical solutions. It allows families to maintain control over the outcome of their dispute while saving on the cost and time that comes with taking a matter to court.

Beaton Burke Young offers mediation services for individuals working with or without a lawyer.

Arbitration

Arbitration is a private alternative to the public court system. A skilled arbitrator chosen by you and the opposing party will resolve disputes just like a judge would. The arbitration process allows for efficiencies; you can tailor the process to suit your family’s needs and agree to deal with some issues more efficiently.  Both you and the opposing party need to agree to arbitrate - it is a voluntary process.

We represent individuals in arbitration and act as arbitrators. We would be happy to discuss this process and determine if it is right for you.

Parenting Coordination

Some families need assistance with the implementation of their agreed upon parenting plan, this is where parenting coordination comes in. parenting coordination is an alternative dispute resolution process that assists families in resolving day-to-day conflicts between co-parents.

A parenting coordinator will first try to help you and your co-parent communicate and resolve the issue. If you are unable to bridge the gap, the parenting coordinator will make the decision.

All of our lawyers can be retained as parenting coordinators.
